Traveler's passing through West Monroe, LA on Interstate 20 may find themselves hungry for some good home style cooking. If so, Belle's Ole South Diner would be one place to satisfy that need. Following the recommendations of a local gal cashiering at Duck Commander, we set off to find ourselves a good lunch.
After a slight mix-up on the directions because this rider misses details like left turn or right turn in his quest to get to the food we soon found the sought after diner. The restaurants sits just off the road and is painted in colors impossible to miss... an entirely red building with yellow trim and we found ourselves trying to find a space big enough to squeeze in two Harley touring bikes. Popular place, always a great sign of things to come.
Warmly greeted upon entry, we were seated and given menus. Giving the menu a quick glance, the fried catfish lunch special for $8.50 seemed to be the way to go. Four fillets of fried catfish, green beans, fried okra pronounced "okree" by those in the know, and hush puppies all washed down with a cold glass of sweet tea.
The food arrived quickly and within seconds we knew we had a winner. The catfish had a very light batter on it, not the typical heavy corn meal batter usually associated with this particular fish. It was light, crispy and perfectly seasoned. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in advance. The catfish was cooked to perfection and probably some of the best this rider has ever tasted. The sides were up to par with the main meal and the friendly atmosphere of the place made this a very enjoyable dining experience.
Belle's should definitely be added to the do not miss list when out and about in northern Louisiana.
