Customer complaints often come out in the convenience of online reviews. Even though it is the authors opinion that emotion should be left out of reviews, it is often the only way that hotels know that there was a problem. The other option is to complain to a corporate representative or hotel management, which really does not help future travelers from avoiding similar experiences. Of course, that is the main point of reviews, to help future travelers avoid bad situations or experience good ones. The importance of reviews are to pass along the best and worst of every hotel visit.
Of course, complaints are a form of review but the only people who see it or know about it is the traveler or guest reporting it, the hotel staff it is reported to , and if the guest/traveler is lucky the hotel manager or owner. Complaints are useful, but not as useful as writing an online review or contacting a representative of the hotel management company or chain affiliation. The best is still the online review. Beware of reviews that look out of place, it is a common marketing ploy. A well written bad review of a hotel can negatively affect the number of rooms sold for the corresponding hotel. A well written, positive review can achieve the exact opposite and increase the number of hotel rooms sold. Either way, hotel revenue is effected by reviews.
