Boston May Day immigration march and rally

On Friday, May 1, 2009, the Boston May Day Committee will march together on International Workers Day and gather, in solidarity, in Everett, Massachusetts. The marches will depart from East Boston, and Chelsea City Hallboth communities are composed of large immigrant populationsand each march will convene at Glendale Park in Everett at 4:30pm that afternoon. These demonstrators will be unified in their demand for a change to immigration laws, and a stand for equal rights and better jobs and wages. These demonstrators will be a part of a nation-wide effort on May 1st to demand more from the Obama Administration and the United States government. Their demands are simple: they support the abolition of the severe enforcement policies of the Bush administration (including raids and deportations), they demand the establishment of a new immigration policy that highlights every humans inalienable rights, and they wish to be acknowledged for their economic and social contributions to the United States by policy makers.

Although in the past, the event has convened on the Boston Common, this year the Committee has decided to forego the Common in hopes that they will drive more immigrant participants by having several marches that convene in one place.

Whichever side you stand on in concern to immigration, it is hard to deny that the drive behind the Boston May Day Committees efforts is at least noble. In these uncertain times of economic and social distress these immigrants, who came to our country from all over the world, are uniting and asking our government to make good on a promise. Its a promise that they owe not just to their immigrants but to many of their citizens as well. Stands like the Boston May Day Committees march on May 1st will only help promote that promise and make a more accountable government for everyone.

So, as the Boston May Day Committee urgesTake the day off on May 1! Join the BMDC contingent! It wont cost you anything, and you may even be a part of something much bigger than a walk to Everett.
