One of the most popular books of recent years is Eat This, Not That, by David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding. In graphic fashion, it presents appetizing alternatives to many fattening and unhealthy food choices. What if you took that approach to your travel in these tough economic times? What would a list of affordable vacation alternatives to more expensive destinations look like? Maybe something like this:

Go Montreal instead of Paris. Save the Eiffel Tower for another time, and try out your high school French in Canada instead. Especially since American dollars are currently worth roughly 35% more when converted to Canadian dollars instead of Euros.

Go Crested Butte instead of Breckenridge, Colorado. "The important to budget travel is to plan onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Arranging and expending our travel budget wisely is a main concern for most families. Minimizing consuming and charges, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!..". The Thrifty 101 blog suggests that you can save more than $200 a person by going a little farther (150 miles) out of the way.

Go Sonoma, California, instead of Tuscany. Wine lovers can save hundreds of dollars on flights and hundreds of dollars a night by tasting the New World beauty of Californias wine country.

Go North Dakota instead of Hawaii. Its a different kind of natural beauty, but North Dakotas price tag of roughly $158 a day (the cheapest in the country, according to AAA) beats Hawaiis expected cost of $793 a dayany day.

Go Dominican Republic instead of Cancun. Some people consider the Dominican Republic (in the Eastern Caribbean) the best value in the area. And its definitely cheaper than Cancun (in the Western Caribbean).

Go Gulf Shores, Alabama, instead of Florida. Unless you live for the nightlife of Miami Beach, Gulf Shores rivals any Florida beach but with a fraction of the crowdsand the expense.

Go Dollywood (Tennessee) instead of Disney World. No, seriously. Even if you dont like country music, its within driving distance, is less crowded, and offers a stunning array of attractions at Dollywood and Splash Country (water park), and in the area.

These alternatives may not be your dream trip. Then again, you may be surprised. Your here, not there vacation may turn out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable youve ever taken.
