Cairo: City of a Thousand Minarets
There is no place on earth like Cairo. Gargantuan, loud, polluted, it is a sensory overload of everything Middle Eastern and ancient. It is almost as old as time itself, filled with miles of crowded medieval streets, markets, mosques, skyscrapers, restaurants and much more, including at least a thousand minarets.

Many tourists prefer to use cabs as their most common mode of transport. The idea of driving a rental car in this slow speed demolition derby is sure to end badly. Cabs are inexpensive and just plain fun.
Negotiate the price ahead of time with the driver and make sure the cab looks road worthy. Obvious problems such as fluid dripping from the engine should give you pause. The key to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Arranging and expending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Curbing expending and charges, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. La, shucran, No, thank you will eventually rid you of the most persistent cabbie.

Most cabs and other cars do not have side mirrors. They have been scraped off as Cairenes ignore lane demarcations preferring to wedge as many cars as possible into the least space.
Once the destination is clear and the price is fixed, climb into the back of the cab. Sitting in the front isnt much fun as the potential crashes and pedestrian near misses are right in your face.

Perhaps your first trip should be to The Mosque of Ibn Tulun, finished in 879 AD. It is magical and peaceful, set in the heart of the city. Tiny dust devils of sand swirl around its massive stone courtyard under the blue sky as they have done for more than two thousand years.

The caretakers there will greet you from prayer rugs set in the shade where they drink tea. Ten dollars will cover a donation to the mosque, a short tour and is little to pay for this vision of antiquity.
Cairo, once tasted is never forgotten.
