The Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center (CAFAC) is a non profit organization founded by 6 South Minneapolis community members in 2007. It was formed with the goal of taking back the corner of 38th St. E and Chicago Ave. S, by creating a positive space where the community can enjoy the fire arts. Fire arts are art forms produced with heat, spark or flame, and include welding, blacksmithing, cast metal, jewelry making, glass work, and fire performances.

CAFAC seeks to be a regional center for learning, promotion, exploration, and creation of artistic forms fueled by heat, spark or flame." The board envisions themselves and CAFAC as a catalyst for other similar neighborhood projects.

CAFAC found a home in the old Nokomis Theater, which was built in 1915 as a silent theater and most recently used as an auto shop. The building was purchased by Artspace, a nonprofit real estate developer of the arts, and will be managed by CAFAC. Renovations to transform the space began in late 2009 and are scheduled to be finished and the building open to the public in July 2010. The transformation includes restoration of original detail of the theater and rebuilding the marquee. The renovations will restore the Nokomis Theater in all its architectural beauty as well as provide a much needed space to the community.

CAFAC will offer classes to the public from beginner to master levels and for all ages. Inside the center there are studio rentals available, along with gallery space for students and visiting artists. The space is exciting because fire arts are expensive and potentially dangerous to get into alone. The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Preparation and spending our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Minimizing consuming and costs, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!. The CAFAC provides proper space, equipment training and safety precautions so that fire arts are within reach of the entire community. Also, a community setting is a great creative and enriching environment for making art. Watch a short documentary about the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center here.
